Before you start, gather the necessary tools including a tape measure, pencil, paper, and calculator.
Begin by sketching a rough floor-plan of the area you want to cover with new flooring. Include all rooms, hallways, closets, and any irregularities like alcoves or bay windows.
Divide the floor-plan into easily measurable sections. For example, if you have a rectangular room with a small alcove, measure the main rectangle separately from the alcove.
Start by measuring in metres the length and width of each section of the floor. Measure from the longest points, including any protrusions like baseboards or moulding.
Once you have the length and width of each section, multiply the two measurements together to get the square meterage of that section. For example, if a room is 10 metres long and 12 metres wide, the square metre would be 120 square metres (10 x 12).
After calculating the square meterage for each section, add them all together to get the total square meterage for the entire floor. This will give you the amount of flooring material you’ll need to cover the entire area.
It’s a good idea to add a little extra to your total square meterage to account for any mistakes during installation or cutting of the flooring material. We recommend, adding 10% to the total square meterage should cover it.
