What is the easiest floor to install by yourself?

Fitting Laminate Flooring with a hammer and marking with a pencil

We get asked this question all the time, what is the easiest flooring to fit?

Whether you’re a seasoned DIY enthusiast or just starting out, installing new flooring can be a rewarding project that adds instant charm to your home. Today, we’ll explore two fantastic options for easy, budget-friendly flooring: LVT and Laminate Flooring.

Let’s start with Luxury Vinyl Tile, better known as LVT.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) offers the beauty of natural materials like stone or hardwood with the added benefits of resilience and easy maintenance. Here’s how easy it is to install LVT like a pro:

1 – Measure Twice, Lay Once: Before you start, measure the dimensions of your room to determine your square Meterage. We always recommend you order an extra 10% for any mistakes or future repairs.

2 – Prepare the Surface: Ensure your subfloor is clean, level, and free of any debris or imperfections. If necessary, use a self-levelling compound to smooth out uneven areas and create a solid foundation for your LVT.

3 – Plan Your Layout: Lay out your LVT tiles in the desired pattern or arrangement before you begin installation. This will help you visualise the finished look and make any necessary adjustments before committing to the layout.

4 – Adhesive Application: Depending on the type of LVT you’ve chosen, you may need to apply adhesive to the back of each tile or directly to the subfloor. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to ensure proper adhesion.

5 – Lay the Tiles: Starting in one corner of the room, begin laying your LVT tiles according to your planned layout. Press each tile firmly into place, using a roller to ensure a secure bond and eliminate any air bubbles.

6 – Trim and Fit: As you reach the edges of the room or encounter obstacles like doorways or cabinets, use a utility knife or vinyl tile cutter to trim the tiles to size. Remember to leave a small expansion gap around the perimeter of the room to allow for movement.

7 – Finishing Touches: Once all the tiles are in place, give your new floor a thorough inspection, checking for any loose tiles or uneven seams. Make any necessary adjustments and enjoy your beautifully transformed space!

Laminate Flooring: Click, Lock, and Roll

If you’re looking for the look of hardwood without the hefty price tag, laminate flooring is the way to go. With its innovative click-together system, installing laminate is a snap. Here’s how easy it is to do it yourself:

1 – Prepare the Planks: Start by acclimating your laminate planks to the room for at least 48 hours. This allows them to adjust to the temperature and humidity of their new environment.

2 – Lay the Foundation: Just like with LVT, ensure your subfloor is clean, level, and dry before you begin. Lay down a moisture barrier if necessary to protect your new floor from any moisture below.

3 – Click and Connect: Begin in one corner of the room and lay your first plank with the tongue facing the wall. With each subsequent plank, simply line up the grooves and tongues and click them into place. Use a tapping block and rubber mallet to gently tap each plank into position.

4 – Trim and Transition: As you approach the edges of the room or doorways, measure and cut the planks to fit using a circular saw or handsaw. Remember to leave a small expansion gap around the perimeter of the room.

5 – Admire Your Handiwork: Step back and admire your beautiful new laminate floor! With its realistic wood-look finish and easy installation, you’ll be amazed at the transformation.

Whether you choose Luxury Vinyl Tile or Laminate Flooring, installing new flooring doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With the right tools, a little patience, and a can-do attitude, you can achieve professional-looking results without the hassle or expense of hiring a contractor.

So roll up your sleeves, unleash your inner DIY guru, and get ready to elevate your space with stylish, budget-friendly flooring that you’ll enjoy for years to come!
